Hessonite (sometimes called the “cinnamon stone”) is a variety of grossular garnet, and its warm orangey-brown color is one of its signature features. The “roiled” or “whisky in water” look comes from swirly internal inclusions, giving the stone a slightly hazy, turbulent appearance when viewed under magnification. Collectors often appreciate this as a diagnostic feature—it helps distinguish hessonite from other similar-looking gems like spessartine garnet.
